Repairs: Service and maintenance

Important information regarding repairs

Even after your purchase of an instrument, we are still here for you. We take care of acute problems and also carry out general overhauls. So that you don't have to go without your instrument for too long, please note:

  • For capacity reasons and considering the waiting time for our new orders, we are unfortunately no longer able to carry out repairs and overhauls on instruments that were not bought from us. We appreciate your understanding.
  • Appointment: Please contact us in advance by e-mail or telephone to arrange a repair or overhaul.
  • Time: Please note that repairs and overhauls are manual work and require a certain amount of time. You can usually expect a general overhaul to take two weeks, including shipping time.
  • Costs: We are only able to give you precise information if we have your instrument for assessment. You will then receive a cost estimate, which we would be happy to discuss with you. As soon as we have received your approval, we can start work on your instrument.
  • Shipping: Place the instrument into an instrument case and, if necessary, also pad it on the inside so that no parts can move around or be bent. If you have special requests, please also include concrete optimization requests for the keywork or the intonation. You can provide us with the tracking number as well so that your package arrives safely with us.
  • Collection/return: You are welcome to collect and check your overhauled instrument directly at our workshop. Alternatively we can post it with an invoice to an address specified by you.

Throughout our clarinets’ manufacturing process we place great value on using durable materials and precisely fitting all moveable parts. Like all mechanical appliances the clarinet is subject to certain wear and tear. Besides mechanical stress, it is also affected by condensation.

If you choose to personally collect your instrument, we will gladly advise you and provide you with customised information on how to properly maintain your instrument. Depending on your playing habits and means of usage, the intervals in which maintenance work becomes necessary, vary. As clarinets don’t come with a built-in hour meter, you, as the owner, need to notice the signs your instrument is displaying.

The padding with quartz resonance pads, as well as SLP leather pads, is extremely durable. However, dust, grime and humidity soil the pads and affect the wood. Cleaning the movable parts thoroughly and oiling the wood regularly is key to ensuring your clarinet a long life. The larger the intervals, the more work it takes. Besides, felts, noise absorbing corks and adjusting screws are the most durable, when well and regularly maintained.

Please remember to have your instrument professionally maintained, annually! Should you be interested, our workshop team will gladly show you some of the smaller maintenance works that can be done at home.

To make a maintenance appointment or get detailed information regarding the costs, please contact us. Only after having inspected your instrument at the workshop, are we able to send you a cost estimate. After reviewing it with you, and having your approval, we start the maintenance process. Please keep in mind that all our work is done by hand and therefore requires time – usually two weeks, including shipment.

Note: Please understand that for capacity reasons, and to reduce the waiting periods for our new builds, we are unfortunately unable to do repair and maintenance work on instruments which haven’t been bought from SCHWENK & SEGGELKE.

By the way: With the right regular care, a multitude of repair and maintenance works can be avoided. For more detailed information on this topic, please visit our care products and tips, as well as our clarinet hacks.
